English language teaching today appears to concentrate more on developing students’ language competence than on training their essential skills for academic and professional success. Among those that seemingly receive little attention in English classes are higher order thinking skills (HOTS) that are essential for students to succeed in today’s world of work and education. Motivated by this gap, this article illustrates how HOTS can be incorporated in the teaching of academic English writing. In what follows, we will briefly review some literature on HOTS and its importance in academic writing before presenting a model writing lesson with a focus on promoting HOTS and detailing how the activities in the lesson should be carried out to this end.
