Self-Identity and Cyberspace Challenges: A Dialogue Between West Asian Syriac Tradition and Modernity

Abstract

This essay draws from the wisdom of the Syriac tradition to address problems and trends in contemporary society. Particularly the moral and spiritual challenges raised by the all-encompassing category of virtual reality. More specifically, I am interested in showing how a modern appropriation of the wisdom in my own tradition regarding the complementary relation of faith and reason, or religion and science, might help solve what I consider to be core worldwide issues that go to the heart of what it means to be human. I am especially interested in the question of self-identity, sexual identity, the sexual revolution, the relation between sexuality and spirituality, and the apparently growing socalled “addictive” epidemic on internet pornography.
