Abstract

In this paper I follow the main lines of argument that Arnold Toynbee developed in his “Study of History” in explaining the growth and destinies of societies and civilizations. He documents how the absolute rulers of every age have had recourse to force as the most reliable tool for the consolidation of power. But this paper wishes to show that enforced changes have no future. Innovations, on the other hand, that are introduced through creative individuals or communities and are true engines of economic growth. In hope that the negative experiences of the past may not be continually repeated, this paper is an appeal to
wisdom, sobriety and far-sightedness, in order to secure a peaceful future.
