Abstract

There is in man the perennial quest for freedom and selfactualization and this lies at the root of the urge to destroy oppressive institutions and unjust arrangements and recreate in their places a humane society which allows for freedom, for freedom alone is the ultimate pre-condition for meaningful creativity. The aim of this paper, therefore, is to carry out a critical assessment of Fanon’s violent approach and Gandhi’s non-violent approach in colonial situations with a view to determining whether both or either of them are relevant to the contemporary postcolonial situation.
